Clovelly village
Clovelly is two areas, Higher Clovelly and Lower Clovelly -The Street. It is located on the North coastline of North Devon in the Southwest of England.
The picturesque village of Clovelly, with it’s cobbled flower-bedecked streets and lack of cars, is unique in England.
It is world-renowned as a special place and unchanged for centuries. Built into a cleft in the 400' [120M] high cliffs the cobbled streets meander down past pretty cottages to the small harbour and pebble beach.
The street leading down to the harbour is lined with cottages, but there is also a café, shops and an Hotel. At the harbour sits the Red Lion Hotel and food providers. There is a wonderful maritime atmosphere and beautiful views - whatever the weather.
Most of Clovelly Parish is in an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” including all the land from the A39 to the coast and is protected for the timeless and unchanging quality of the countryside and coastline fauna and flora.
Steeped in history
Clovelly is famous for its donkeys, and man powered sledges for transporting goods. There are links with the writers Kingsley and Dickens, the artists Turner and Whistler and the Spanish Armada.
The village is privately owned and has been by the same family since 1738. Their policy is to care for Clovelly and keep it in the style of mid C19th, which involves quality maintenance using traditional materials and craftmanship.
